The Guatós are an indigenous group originating from Ínsua Island in the Mato Grosso pantanal wetlands of Brazil. Thought to be extinct in the 1960s, the culture was rediscovered by a missionary in the 1970s who found 30 Guatós spread throughout the Mato Grosso region. Today there are around 20 Guató descendants living again in their ancestral homeland of Ínsua Island. During an attempt to reclaim part of their original territory the Guató leader was murdered and the perpetrators were never punished. 500 Almas uses a mock trial of these assassins to explore the socio-political memory of the Guató people. Director Joel Pizzini assembles a mosaic of sound and image in his depiction of the mythical universe of the Guató culture. This ethnopoetic essay explores the links between culture, language, territory and identity through the remarkable sagas of the Guató tribe. (DOK.fest München)
