Mucha’s cabinet of curiosities presents us with a new species: the pawnbroker. In three German pawnbrokers’ shops something unusual is happening; in the crisis-born craft of moneylenders business is booming! First and foremost, the pawnbrokers are sharp business people but they also act as counsellors and all-round experts in a variety of fantastic goods. Under the magnifying glass come gold teeth (with roots attached), weapons of questionable provenance, forged gold coins and a host of other treasures. On the other side of the counter, the true face of the financial crisis is revealed in an existential play. In the search for fast money, people choose the emergency exit from their financial shortcomings and would pawn, if needs be, the shirts off their backs. Strangely accommodating? Just come on in … !
