angol Cautious approval. If Blumhouse was self-critical enough to not release The Veil in cinemas but send it directly to the VOD networks, I’m going to oblige and give the film some mild compliment. I appreciate the visible production values; It’s a nicely shot film, with decent actors, an atmosphere that rears up its head here and there and also a nicely captured environment (by the way, much nicer locations that the recent The Forest, which should’ve been built on that, actually). However, someone went a bit too far with the filters, though what hurts the film the most is the performance of Thomas Jane, whose overacting is off the charts. Actually, you can’t even call it overacting, it’s such an over the top written character that it’s almost a parody that unnaturally sticks up from the rest of the film, and therefore it can’t be taken very seriously. angol No sooner had it started and I was already showing disinterest and knew it wasn't going to be for me. 40 minutes of boredom and with the arrival of the first fairly good scare, the film caught my attention. It was shot OK, but still had a B-movie feel to it. I loved the adorable Jessica Alba and my favourite Thomas Jane, who unfortunately overacts a bit too much here, which doesn't make a very good impression. The ending is weird, but I'll give it 3* for the actors and two good scares. At least it's watchable compared to the ghost stories of late. Too bad Phil Joanou didn't go the exploitation route instead. He proved in The Punisher: Dirty Laundry that gore is not a problem for him at all. 50% ()

angol The Veil is a film that I enjoyed because of its theme and also because the unraveling of the mystery is well-paced. It's not immediately clear what it's all about and how it will end. Therefore, I have to give the film more credit because, in my opinion, it deserves it. It's a somewhat different perspective on cults, a slightly different take on the theme of ghosts and paranormal abilities, where nothing is certain. And Jim Jacobs's final monologue is simply chilling. ()
