Matterhorn

Widower Fred lives his tedious, lonely life in a small religious Dutch village. As part of his strict regime he eats his dinner daily at exactly 6pm and goes to church every Sunday. When suddenly homeless, mentally challenged tramp, Theo wanders into his life, Fred’s stereotypical routine is turned upside down. He takes the stranger in and offers him food and shelter, and teaches him good manners. Together with his new companion, Fred experiences the joys of life again. But when nasty rumors start spreading around the village, Fred panics. This dry tragicomedy, dealing with issues of loneliness and liberation and providing a satisfying, heart-felt climax, was a major audience hit in its native Holland and at many film festivals.
