Renata is a young woman who is dangerous to be around and is even a threat to herself. She feels best when she doesn’t have to control herself and when someone reacts to her spontaneous ideas. One would think she needs help but, considering her behavior, this is rarely the message that comes across. Sooner or later those close to her are rightfully put off by her excessively dissolute lifestyle and tendency to lie. So she traipses around San Francisco without heading anywhere or consciously looking for anything. The point of the film is not its dramatic plot but the impression of absolute authenticity and the possibility of intimately approaching a character who is portrayed with all her shortcomings, like the protagonists in the films of John Cassavetes. Despite all the work’s wistfulness there are also clear traces of anxiety. It shows that even freedom can be depressing and that the ability to “fly” doesn’t necessarily mean happiness. Despair wells up from the heroine’s unsettled lifestyle, but the movie also gives reasons to believe that she will not lose her way in life despite all the obstacles.
