Különös haláleset ügyében keresik fel Sherlock Holmes-t. A nemrégiben elhunyt Sir Charles Baskervilles végrendeletének gondozója egy furcsa, régi papirosra lelt. Az írás szerint Baskerville lakóit immár kétszáz éve átok sújtja: azóta, hogy a kastély hajdani urát Hugo De Baskerville-t egy sátáni külsejű kutya szétmarcangolta a birtok közeli lápban. A legenda szerint a kutya azóta is kísérti a család tagjait. Habár a nemrégiben elhunyt Sir Charles Baskerville halálát szívbénulás okozta, amikor hajnalban rátaláltak, eltorzult vonásaiból látható volt, hogy iszonyú félelem rántotta görcsbe a szívét. Sir Charles megszállottan hitt a legendában és éjszakánként hallotta is a kutya eszelős üvöltését a láp felől. Akkor még a doktor is úgy vélte, mindez egy gyenge egészségű idős ember beteges képzelgése. De most már nem annyira bizonyos ebben... Ráadásul Sir Henry Baskervilles, a család utolsó sarja, alighogy megérkezik Dartmoorba, rejtélyes üzenetet kap, melyben egy ismeretlen arra figyelmezteti, ha kedves az élete, jobb, ha távol tartja magát Dartmoortól. Nem sokkal azután, hogy megérkezik a Baskervilles kastélyba, furcsa fények villannak fel a láp felől, s felhangzik egy hátborzongató üvöltés... Sir Sherlock Holmes fogja kideríteni, hogy vajon miféle szerzet lehet a Sátán kutyája? (DunaTV)

Studio Hammer used the horror potential of Doyle's novel to perhaps one hundred and ten percent, but fortunately they have not forgotten the detective story either and have mixed both in the right proportion so that the viewer does not get bored for even a second. Moreover, Peter Cushing is a great Holmes and André Morell a great Watson - not possible to write something similar about Christopher Lee.

An atmospheric movie from Hammer studios which is rightly considered to be one of the best adaptation of Holmes’ adventures. A blot on the macabre landscape here is Peter Cushing who should have been a little less of a mundane Holmes, for my taste. Although I understand that to act decently in scenes when you are on set with Christopher Lee in his very best years is almost impossible, but Cushing shrinks away in them almost indecently. Despite playing absolutely wonderfully in many other situations. Otherwise, nothing to fault.

Terence Fisher was able to skillfully direct the film with the resources he had, especially with the actors that the studio paid for. These are excellent performances that drive the story forward and create the necessary atmosphere of paranoia and fear that are essential to the story. Additionally, there is the paranormal element that makes the story even more mysterious, and you are afraid that the dog will appear in front of you and finally see its terrifying beauty.
