Set in the West at the turn of the century, the story focuses on Hudson, owner of a gambling den, and Baxter, his girl friend, who's addicted to making bets. The pair decide to go straight and head for a new town and a new lifestyle, taking Hudson's kid brother, Barry Curtis, along. When they encounter the orphaned Wood, they decide to take her in as well. Hudson gets a new job, and all goes well until the venomous Adams arrives. She has eyes for Hudson, and she uses her banker father's money to gain legal custody of the children. Baxter leaves town, and Hudson marries Adams so as not to lose the youngsters. When Adams is killed in a fire, Baxter returns and the foursome are happily reunited. It's a real tearjerker, but mounted with a sincerity that keeps it from degenerating into soap opera.
