"I'll take a quarterpound of that Hamburger", the host of the Mr. Leather election says about German Thomas Karasch, Mr. Leather of 1987 who has meanwhile died of aids. 'Tom of Hamburg' is one of the central figures in Menmaniacs, taking the viewer on a tour of the leather scene. In this world, which is mainly populated by gays with sadomasochistic sympathies, the pinnacle of joy is to wear a black leather outfit with accessories like small whips, chains, collars and rings through various private parts. Boot licking is also very much in vogue with some leather aficionados. The shootings for Menmaniacs mainly took place during the two largest American events in the leather scene: the International Mr. Leather and the Mr. Drummer elections.
