Match Point

A brilliantly written and acted conversational drama, with an ending that, as you can see from the reviews here, many viewers will find hard to stomach. But it’s the denouement of the story, surprising, somewhat cynical, going against the established stereotypes, trampling on my idealistic soul, that gives the whole narrative the right poignancy (those for whom Columbo, Perry Mason or other detective stories are daily bread will probably be unpleasantly surprised). The only weakness I can see is the character of the detective, whose speech in the final five minutes (the way he suddenly gets up from bed or gesticulates comically when he reveals his theory) pushes the story to a kind of farce. But that's really just such a small blip on the beauty of the whole. (2006.09.24)

The "hard" cinematography and the narration going through an avalanche of dialogues with the absence of visual narration initially confuse the viewer, but the dream romance turns into a drama, then into a thriller, and the morality falls on its face into the mud. That’s quite an unorthodox way to go against the sunshine trend, which Allen does get to with a very shaggy insert from the detective office. However, it was probably all worth the feeling of Dostoyevsky turning uneasily in his grave a few times. (2014.08.22)

An ace right on the line. If it was a little to the side, it would be an out. But Woody’s serve is millimeter-accurate in every way. A demonstration that the ideological elements of Russian classics can work in modern and culturally different settings. (2013.07.31)

Romance novel material. Or maybe even lust novel. After many years of not such good movies, Woody really needed the ball to fall on the right side of the net, even if it meant a drop shot. Moving the acting to London giving it a hint of Hitchcock won him the entire match. And as his following movies show, this was no swan song or stroke of luck. Thank god. (2008.12.26)

"So who will be my next victim? You?" Master Allen has found a new muse, moved to London - and shocked the whole world with a total change of genre. He shocked me too, but in the most positive way. Woody touches the conscience of all sinners and wrongdoers while sympathizing with them carefully. By not appearing in the film himself, he gives the viewer a sense of a personal masterpiece and perhaps even confession. At this moment, I feel like we haven't had such a masterpiece from him in a sea of years, especially in a more serious genre branch. Moreover, both the incredibly seductive Scarlett and the incredibly credible Meyers are going full force and make Match Point possibly one of the director's Top 3. (2006.12.16)

I like the love triangle according to Woody. I completely disagree that this isn’t a Woody Allen classic. It seems to me that it retains his style. And if he was improvising in a new direction, it was just an added bonus. What caught my attention was the Scarlett as a blackmailer and Jonathan Rhys Meyers as a man who is incapable of arranging his life rationally. But I don't mind at all that he did it irrationally... at least that meant there was more drama. Crazy, but good. 4 stars. (2011.08.21)

Allen can really surprise us even at an older age and he proves that he is far from done, and if he has the same tenacious roots as his dad, he will still please us film fans with a decent line of movies. Match Point is a film where I couldn't guess the name of the director and creator of the story and screenplay in advance. The film breaks away from the traditional pattern of Allen's intellectual conversation films and is more of a fateful psychological drama supported by a crime plot. The story of a careerist who wanted everything and in the end had to sacrifice a lot and some people paid a heavy price for his rise. The film's strength lies in the excellent portrayal of society and the psychological profile of the individual characters in the story. It is a very believable affair supported by great acting. Scarlett Johansson is charming and playing these types of femme fatales comes naturally to her, and the other actors also give great performances. A distinctly European film that is one of the best Allen has ever made. It proves that he is not only capable of comedy. I didn't miss not seeing him as an actor in the film at all. Unfortunately, the final quarter of the film is very different from the rest in terms of its concept, which downgrades the overall impression by at least a notch. From a fairly promising, decently acted, and emotionally powerful film, in the final moments it becomes a comical farce, humorous on its own but not quite fitting. Woody Allen makes the most out of the minimum, he pics talented actors and an attractive theme (a love triangle), places them in an even more attractive setting (English high society), and complements everything with sharp and dynamically written dialogues. But no matter how good the film may seem at the beginning, the ending is very bad and disappointing. Overall, it's something between three and four stars. (2006.03.24)

When the main "hero" of Woody Allen's film (the supremely unsympathetic Jonathan Rhys Meyers) reads Dostoyevsky's ‘Crime and Punishment", it can't turn out particularly well for him... Or can it? Match Point is an excellent spectacle. It doesn't matter that almost nothing happens during the first hour that the viewer wouldn't expect, because what happens next and especially at the end makes up for it. However, I have to disagree with the opinions that there is no humor in the film. There is. It's black through and through, but it's there. (2015.07.10)

My relationship with Woody Allen's films has evolved (or perhaps is still evolving). There was a time when I was crazy about his films, but my enthusiasm has somewhat waned since then and I'll have to revise some of my ratings. This does not affect Match Point, though. Not only is it not a comedy, but it has an interesting plot, and the personality of the main "hero" goes through an interesting development. Personally, I always appreciate a film about a spineless, self-centered asshole. I can finally experience emotions that I don’t get to feel often when watching movies. Filmmakers always try to move me or thrill me, but sometimes it's also nice to feel disgusted and repulsed by some asshole's actions. To my satisfaction, this movie does a great job of it. Woody Allen, they are definitely not just comedies. My third encounter with Allen happened with a slight surprise, because after films that are mainly conversational comedies/tragedies, or dream-like pieces, I jumped straight into the thriller genre. Can a perfect crime be committed? The film is actually not about how to prepare for the crime, that is just a part of the whole story. The crime itself is not at the center of the plot. The focus is on a young man who gets married. Not because he is in love, but because his fiancée has a wealthy father who owns a company where the young man could succeed. And so it happens. However, there is something missing in their easy-going relationship. Especially passion, and maybe even love from the man's side. He finds everything he needs in the young woman, Nola, with whom he becomes very close and finds everything he is lacking at home. Hot and beautiful sex, understanding, tenderness. Well, maybe he has that at home, but this adventure is something new, it is beautiful, forbidden, and therefore tempting. Although his relationship with Nola goes through certain twists and turns, it even seems like he would leave his wife for her. But then everything breaks apart. Jonathan Rhys Meyers, who played the main character, summarized it beautifully in the following speech (I am paraphrasing): "I love her, but what would I do with her? What kind of life would it be? I am used to a certain standard." Woody Allen shows that he is truly close to all topics. He can precisely express what the character feels, and both Rhys Meyers and the beautiful Scarlett Johansson (yes, I have a weakness for her, I took a picture of her huge billboard in Venice's St. Mark's Square) are perfect in their roles and portray real characters, not just fabricated ones. Even though the film turns into a thriller towards the end, it doesn't bother at all. It is an amazing culmination of what preceded. The film is predominantly underscored by opera music, which may not be tolerable for everyone, but on the other hand, strong melodies fit here and there. Although it is quite dramatic, it still stays within certain limits. But mainly, it is because the film gets under your skin. Of course, the most enjoyable thing is to have wealth, social status, and strong support, while experiencing true love, fully succumbing to passion, being completely satisfied both materially and physically – and at the same time you learn how to sweep any guilt or remorse under the rug and get on with life – you have to, or else that can destroy it. Match Point is first and foremost a very clever film and, for me, just further confirmation that Woody Allen is a very special filmmaker who I will have to focus on much more than I have so far. Allen's London gives an absolutely divine impression – it seems like a place with limitless possibilities, where all you really need to achieve your dreams is just a little bit of luck, just being in the right place at the right time and meeting the right people. Plus, the whole narrative is stunningly elegant, which of course can be attributed to Woody's experience and the inimitable way he works with all of the material. SPOILER ALERT The moral decline of the main character then just perfectly demonstrates the reality of what a person can ultimately be capable of in order to avoid the inevitable return to a lower social stratum and give up their high standard of living.
