A Stuart Samuels azonos című könyvén alapuló dokumentumfilm azt a folyamatot tárja fel, hogyan vált néhány már-már vérlázítóan provokatív film szubkulturális jelenségből a fősodor részévé, kitaposva az utat a modern amerikai független filmnek, ahogy azt ma, a Sundance korában ismerjük. 1970 és 1977 között hat játékfilm kitágította az underground filmezés határait, és tömeges nézőtábort toborzott köré: az El topo, az Élőhalottak éjszakája, a The Harder They Come, a Rózsaszín flamingó, a Rocky Horror Picture Show és a Radírfej voltak ezek a filmek. Midnight Movies is revelatory, funny and nostalgic, while placing the selected titles in a broader context. It is ideal as an introductory familiarisation with the often wrongly interpreted concept of midnight movies. It’s a shame that more shots of screenings weren’t captured, because words alone, no matter how enthusiastically delivered, are not enough in this case.
