When it was made, it was undoubtedly an above-average war comedy that had a high chance of capturing the attention of Soviet and foreign audiences. However, the film was met with disfavor from official Soviet circles who did not like the relaxed atmosphere of the film, where Soviet soldiers were not depicted with the usual dose of pathos, but primarily as people with many weaknesses and imperfections. The film also indicates certain problematic aspects of the treatment of war prisoners, etc. The film relies on several comic incidents of the main protagonist, and despite the film's certain worn-out quality, it is a watchable affair that will be appreciated especially by fans of the Russian film school and war films. Overall impression: 60%. From today's perspective, it is an outdated vision of war, and the opponents are simply enemies whom the screenwriter and director did not dare to humanize enough.
