Family is forever. And family means love. These words introduce the main concept of HBO's documentary A family is a family is a family. Family has of course often been defined in terms of a particular time and place and with respect to the specific social norms and laws of individual societies. And laws have very precise notion of what a family looks like and who is and is not a part of it. This idea however does not always correspond with the current social reality. This documentary offers a somewhat different view on the understanding of the term family in American society. Unusually, rather than interviewing scientists, lawmakers or parents, this documentary devotes a lot of screen time to the children themselves, who are very often excluded from such discussions. This film was produced by Rosie O'Donnell, who is an American actress, producer and activist. She does not shy away from introducing her own family into the film or specific issues of families with same-sex parents. (Academia Film Olomouc)
