Cigarreres

There is no doubt that the cigarreres (cigar makers) shaped the city of Gijón, writing 160 years of its history through the tobacco factory «La Tabacalera», located in the neighbourhood of Cimavilla. Beyond the history that these walls undoubtedly contain, the film explores the extent to which this factory was linked to Gijón society. Far beyond the production, organisation and distribution of its merchandise, we find the singularity of its human capital, the women, the cigarreres. This is the story of the last of them, heirs to a matriarchal tradition that lasted until its closure in 2002. (Gijón International Film Festival)
