The 19th-century English travellers were impressed by the beauty of the Pale di San Martino Dolomite group with most of the peaks still unclimbed. The first reached was the Cimon della Pala (3184 m) in 1870, defined by John Ball as the Matterhorn of the Dolomites. On 10 August 2021, Peter Moser linked six of the main peaks in a single day.
