As in Cube, Natali's direction revels in the facial shots, especially the bulging eyes, and whether you know the original story or not, you won't mind knowing what's going on. It’s just fun. A very disturbing metaphor of contemporary society (it would be hard to find a more horrific setting than this women's group, to be sure), shot with Juraj Herz-like cinematography and played to perfection by Kate Miccuci – her final look into the camera made me really want to applaud her. I didn't expect that a story based on Lovecraft (which also stars Crispin Glover) would be such a mess. The screenwriter's attempt to extend the straightforward story failed, the added stuff is more awkward and boring than thrilling. There are a few great scenes, but what can I say, the weakest piece of Del Toro's cabinet so far. The first story that played on Lovecraft was much more Lovecraft than this one. (2022.11.12)
