In his both melancholic and playful essay on death, life, vitality and the cyclical nature of being, octogenarian Kaneto Shindo intertwines more or less civil narration with expressive symbolism. The film about old age enabled the return of the stars of the classical period of Japanese cinema and sadly became the director's good-bye with his muse and life partner Nobuko Otowa.
