One of only two films shot by Bunuel in English, this provocative film is a mesmerizing story of power, deception and manipulatio set on a remote island off the Carolina coast. I was a bit nervous about what to expect from Luis Buñuel, but this is completely different than I thought. Above all, it is not surrealistic, but a completely realistic film with a very powerful message. The characters are wonderfully performed and it demonstrates that prejudice and hatred are strong driving forces. But it is possible, maybe sometimes they do not prevail.
