On an island out in the archipelago, shortly after the war, the body of a soldier floats ashore. The Count on the island, Magnus, is having an extramarital affair with the teacher, Helen. Magnus learns that the King of Sweden has decreed that the island be expropriated for military purposes, but does not inform the other islanders. This decision by the king causes a transformation in him. When the soldier's body suddenly disappears, along with the pastor, who has been the object of the count's antipathy, the islanders become suspicious of Magnus. The islanders consider Helen's radical ideas provocative and want to dismiss her and replace her with the pastor. Through the actions of Magnus's wife Marianne, the islanders settle their differences and are reconciled when they learn what the future is to hold for them and their island.
