The film is set in Karelia (North-West of Russia, near Finland) in 1941 during WWII. In a beautiful and quiet wilderness far from the front-line there is an anti-aircraft artillery point, where corporal Vaskov is stationed with a group of many young women in training. One of the women while sneaking from camp to visit her young son sees two German paratroopers. Vaskov takes five of the women to stop the two paratroopers, but finds sixteen paratroopers instead, leaving the small group of patriots to engage the enemy in an unequal fight. (iTunes)

For a film made in 1972, it was surprisingly low on political propaganda. I was expecting a much bigger dose of Komsomol and revolutionary fervor. Instead I got a very decently made war movie that I would have easily given more stars if it weren't for the unfortunate scenes in color. They felt distracting and out of place with all the pantomime and stare-offs. Overall, they seemed fairy-tale-like and pointless.

When you don't look at the fact that it's from Russia, you realize that this is a really great film that deserves attention, and not just for war movie lovers. Three hours in this case don't matter at all because it's a film that keeps you engaged the entire time. The characters are so great that they’ll grab you. Moreover, the black-and-white design with color sequences feels beautifully poetic.
