Salah al-Din (Saladin) was an Arab leader in the 12th century who united the formerly disputatious Arab tribes and liberated Jerusalem from the crusaders. East Jerusalem in 2000: a life of permanent waiting. For whom or what? For the Messiah? For Godot? For Salah al-Din? Who cares. At 2 a.m. already, a queue is forming in front of the Ministry of the Interior. Everybody is supposed to wait. A drama group, travelling to Tel Aviv, is waiting for one of its actors. Was he arrested? Street vendors are waiting for customers and sell at dumping prices. Suleiman is waiting for his son who one day disappeared without trace. Meanwhile the army has destroyed his house and he has rebuilt it. Who cares? The film tells the story of people in East Jerusalem, seemingly citizens of the State of Israel with equal rights. In reality they live under a regime of occupation. (DOK.fest München)
