Josef Novotný, director at a little hand-puppet theatre, finds himself in an unenviable situation after his return from a tour. The Slovak Elena Teplanská, a demobilized member of the foreign army, has acquired a permanent lease on the flat he had been renting as a lodger from the singer Šimůnek. Elena wants to set up a tailors' workshop and has no thoughts for any lodgers. Because Šimůnek goes missing, Josef loses his claim on the use of the flat. The energetic Elena searches with Josef for a new place for him to live but they are unsuccessful. Living together in the small flat brings unexpected difficulties each day which culminate in the sudden arrival of the original owner of the flat. Josef and Elena, who have fallen in love in the meantime, see marriage as the only way out. At the same time other accommodation problems are resolved in the house. The wealthy Mrs Rybová exchanges her big flat with the large Vejvoda family and Šimůnek, who finds in Mrs Rybová a kindred spirit, moves in with her. (forgalmazó hivatalos szövege)
