Kim Bok-nam salinsageonui jeonmal (2010)

angol Asians, in this case Koreans, and their urge to produce something nasty and disgusting. In this case it was supported by a nice Korean countryside, one inconspicuous village and a family with more skeletons in the closet than anyone would have guessed. An interesting thematic small-scale film.

David Gale élete (2003)

angol For the whole two hours this film was reminding me of the perfect thriller Seven. Most of all due to the atmosphere and the locations, where it was raining almost all the time. But also due to the story, which certainly belongs among the interesting American thrillers, which shock with its storyline, but most of all with the finale. Truth be told, there are not many films like that and that is the reason why I appreciate this film so much. Also, Kevin Spacey was amazing and was perfectly complemented by Kate Winslet. And the last 35 minutes were really suspenseful, and I was on pins and needles the whole time. If not for the boring bits in the first half, I would have rated it with five stars. At the same time, I think that Seven fans should not miss this flick. It was pretty close to Seven at least with the atmosphere, and until recently, I had no idea it existed.

Une liaison pornographique (1999)

angol A man meets a woman. A woman meets a man. There is tension. And then there is An Affair of Love. The camera is telling a story and at the same time it questions the actors individually, so it is a combination of acted and documentary form. Not my cup of tea.

Lad de små børn (2004)

angol Properly told Scandinavian drama. The only difference is that this film contains a significant number of shocking twists, so the finale is rather a consequence of everything that shocks your during the one and a half hour. This approach is a bit unusual for Scandinavians, but still, it is a film of a very good quality.

A félelem íze (1961)

angol Maybe it’s just my current mood, but I really did not consider Taste of Fear to be some kind of jewel among horror movies. It was filmed in the sixties, so I often struggle with the naivety and amateurism of the main characters. There are also some ridiculous dialogues, the kind I would have troubles with even in a comedy. The film is helped by the atmosphere, which comparable to the one in The Haunting, meaning it has quality. Nevertheless, you are still aware of how old this movie is. And that sometimes fits a movie, and sometimes it doesn’t.

Baby(a)lone (2015)

angol The first meeting with a pure filmmaking of Luxembourg was almost flawless. Unknown language, places, locations, people or actors… All of that contributed to me being absolutely clueless of what to expect of a movie like this. The most interesting was the story, which deserved my attention at the first glance. And after watching it I have to say it was completely justified. My unfamiliarity with the Luxembourg mentality meant that I had no idea what can happen next. The director perfectly pictured two human souls who lived through their childhood the way they felt at the moment. While at times what they did to the people around them was nasty, on the other hand you can’t deny there was the honesty to play and just enjoy their childhood. The director really captured that so while they made me sick, they also made me really sad. It’s a pity the ending just faded into the void.

Perfect Blue (1997)

angol A cartoon psycho movie about a split personality with a hint of erotic can really be filmed only by a Japanese.

Hős (2002)

angol You will never see prettier and better Chinese movie containing everything you imagine about their medieval culture.

A ház hideg szíve (1963)

angol Probably even the Lumière brothers with the first film ever wanted to scare the audience. It stuck with the filmmaking industry since then and in every decade, we get to see how far films would go to frighten their viewers. With The Haunting I was really curious about that. The premise was more than good. However, it is apparent that we live in a completely different time now, because what happens in the film had little to do with haunting, yet the atmosphere was still quite good. It’s a pity that the main character was so snobbish, and the professor was waltzing through the house as if he didn’t give a fuck about the ghosts.

Páncélba zárt szellem (1995)

angol Visually a really spectacular flick, which is something the Japanese are really good at in similar films. It is more complicated with the story, as it certainly does not belong among the simpler ones. And the form of narration does not help that either. I had troubles concentrating on the story about cyborgs, when I was staring at that incredible precision in the animation. And it was not helped by the fact that after the less talkative half, the second half began, which somehow started to explain everything. You would expect some top-notch shocking finale, which in reality is pretty quiet and thought-provoking. So much that during the beautiful meditative music accompanying the end credits (which, after all, was playing throughout the whole film) I was just staring speechlessly, thinking about the meaning of the whole thing.
