A bárányok hallgatnak (1991)

angol The flagship of the 90s psychothriller genre, which blended traditional crime thriller with a horror atmosphere and morbid details. The Silence of the Lambs managed to transcend genre limitations, winning five Oscars for its "depraved" genre and garnering enthusiastic reviews from film critics. Several fortunate moments converged during the film's production - a clever script that, despite the bizarre nature of its antiheroes, navigates within a realistic setting; a skillful director who crafted the film's allure not through frantic action or bloody, naturalistic violence, but through a carefully constructed atmosphere brimming with tension, uncertainty, and fear. Naturally, the excellent casting also contributed to its success, with the seemingly fragile Jodie Foster and the typographically precise Anthony Hopkins, who embodied the monstrous charm of Lecter and became the most captivating serial killer in film history. Overall impression: 95%.

A báránysültek hallgatnak (1994) Boo!

angol I've seen many bad movies, but The Silence of the Hams deserves its own special category. If I could give a negative rating, I would do so without hesitation. The jokes are rehashed a hundred times over, and if any have potential, they are delivered so cheaply that it kills the punchline... I suffered a lot. Overall rating: 0, underlined three times!

A Barbár - Legenda a szellemharcosról (2007)

angol A gritty fantasy tale that somewhat reminded me of Conan the Barbarian. It has about as much in common with the historical reality of Vikings as I, an atheist, have with the role of a cardinal in the Roman Catholic Church. Within the genre, it's clearly below average in terms of both script quality and direction. The only noteworthy aspect might be the costumes. Overall impression: 25%.

Abba - A film (1977)

angol ABBA's music was a big part of my childhood, and I associated this film with their best songs. However, to be honest, the film offers nothing beyond those songs. The script is weak, and the story is almost non-existent, serving only as a flimsy bridge between musical numbers. For a documentary, it is too staged. Overall impression: 40%.

Abbahagyom, ha akarom (2014)

angol The idea is great, but the execution is only slightly above average. Sydney Sibilia hasn't done a lot of fruitful directorial and screenwriting work, and it's a bit noticeable. On one hand, it is necessary to appreciate that I Can Quit Whenever I Want avoids awkward pandering to the viewer, so common in the comedy genre, but on the other hand, there is a lot of unused potential felt in many places. The connection of the academic world with the world of crime offered plenty of funny gags and characters that deviate from the usual standards and mediocrity, which directly called for it. But still, it's a fine experience that I appreciate, and my overall impression is 75%.

A befagyott folyó (2008)

angol American cinema often doesn't invite you to this society. The husband is a slacker and a player, the distrainor doesn't know what to take, a miserable job without prospects, and the goal of getting a decent roof over your head is out of reach. Then one fateful encounter comes along with an offer to improve a joyless life when the price is just a few hours of fear while driving over a frozen river. The nearby border offers a decent opportunity for extra income for clever smugglers, especially when the nearby Indian reservation offers a seemingly safe hideout. However, the pitcher goes to the water so many times that the handle breaks... Frozen River is not a film made for effect, it has the appearance of a typical independent American film, and popcorn movie lovers may rightly feel dissatisfied. Frozen River could have become one of the many routine crime thrillers. Instead, a psychological drama about the unique relationship between two women from different cultural backgrounds and their clash with the law was created. Melissa Leo's convincing performance ensures the film's four-star rating. Overall impression: 75%.

A belgák királya (2016)

angol King of Belgians is a unique film for which it is difficult to find any equivalent. It has attracted attention for its undisputed originality and has rightly received positive responses at various festivals. By the way, as a festival film, it belongs to the more sympathetic minority of competition films that do not represent noble boredom for snobs and the social bubble of festival audiences. The quasi-documentary road movie about the journey of a dethroned monarch across the Balkans remains on a civil level and does not attempt to unleash a marathon of entertaining antics, to which the initial situation tempts. On one hand, this leads to a feeling of incompleteness and unused potential, while on the other, it evokes a sense of authenticity and strengthens the effort to give the film a documentary tone. For me, it is a likable affair. Overall impression: 75%.

A belső ember (2006)

angol An elegant stylish crime film with an intelligent script, likable characters, several twists, and an unexpected ending. That's exactly the kind of movie I like - it keeps me in suspense throughout the duration and pleases me at the end. It has a very decent cast, where Clive Owen and Jodie Foster naturally dominate. Overall impression: 90%. Spike Lee doesn't need almost any action to create an atmosphere, as he relies on perspective and the cleverness of his heroes.

A belső tenger (2004)

angol Thematically and in terms of how it was made, this is an exceptionally powerful albeit unsettling film. The weighty theme of voluntary departure from life is captured realistically, without cheap sentiment, and yet extraordinarily emotively. Javier Bardem gives an excellent performance in the lead role, and both of his female partners excel in their respective roles. A socially significant film, of which there are few. Overall impression: 95%.

A berni csoda (2003)

angol If I were a football fan, I would definitely add another star, but I really am not. I understand the popularity of The Miracle in Bern in Germany because it is a kind and slightly cheesy film that soothes and blows on sore spots while pretending to open and address serious problems such as the war trauma of a returnee from Soviet captivity. But that film is too sweet and banal in its culmination. It is simply shallow, nicely groomed, and pleasant to watch, but that's really it. Overall impression: 45%.
