Srácurak (1975)

angol There are movies that we remember from childhood as amazing experiences, and when we return to them after years, we bitterly realize that they have aged and above all, they simply don't work in adulthood. The Goonies belong to those rare exceptions when the film experience repeats every time I watch it again. I become a kid again, embarking on adventurous expeditions, having plenty of free time, and enjoying it despite occasional adult hardships. Whenever I hear the familiar film melody and the voice prompts me, "Don't just stand there, come on," I go and immerse myself once again in the world of my childhood memories. Overall impression: 90%.

Balhé (2003)

angol The result of this movie is quite sad, considering the great acting team that was assembled. Besides the uninspiring screenplay, which borrows motifs from other successful films, the inexperienced direction of Brad Mirman is also to blame for not achieving much in the role of director. One-time use film. Overall impression: 50%.

Larry Flint, a provokátor (1996)

angol The life themes of Forman's films are the position of defined personalities within the system and especially the search for personal freedom within a liberal society. Where are the limits of acceptable human behavior, where does freedom of speech end, and whether it should be set at all? In The People vs. Larry Flynt, he continued what he started in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and continued in the musical Hair. While his previous films received enthusiastic applause from critics and audiences, The People vs. Larry Flynt faced harsh criticism from multiple sides. It came from both the influential Christian right and the equally influential feminist movement, as both groups organized furious demonstrations and disrupted the distribution of the film. The film sparked great controversy and Forman was left significantly isolated this time. Honestly, the real Larry Flynt is an extremely repulsive character, whom Forman, despite all efforts to capture from many angles in the most diverse perspective, humanized inappropriately. This was also aided by the fact of personal friendship between the director and Larry Flynt. Woody Harrelson's outstanding performance in the lead role also contributed to this humanization. The real Flynt was not so much a victim of his passions as he was an excellent unscrupulous businessman. From a directorial standpoint, it is an extraordinary film with a great cast, and even Courtney Love as an uncontrollable bullet of American pop culture performs very well. And why not, when she essentially plays herself? Edward Norton is perfectly cast and the supporting actors around the main stars deliver reliable performances. Only the pathos at the end of the film is unnecessary. But that is related to what I suggested above. It is not a bad film at all, but for its content, I have a considerably colder attitude toward it compared to Forman's other films. Overall impression: +- 80%.

Ember a Holdon (1999)

angol Miloš Forman's filmography has two peaks: In terms of content and the significance of the theme, his best film is One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, but in terms of film language, editing, and film structure, the most interesting is definitely Man on the Moon. From a commercial perspective, it is Forman's most daring film, as such a demanding work could not find a place in the American market. Jim Carrey's performance is literally fascinating, and undoubtedly, it is his triumph, through which he definitively broke free from the box of a mocking comedian in undemanding comedies. Thanks to the complex personality of Andy Kaufman, the myth surrounding his character, and a series of mystifications accompanying his life (which the screenplay skillfully utilizes), I think it is the most interesting biographical film I have had the opportunity to see so far. Overall impression: 100%.

Tűz van, babám! (1967)

angol The best film by Miloš Forman that he made before leaving for overseas. At the same time, a sophisticated and uncomfortably effective sarcastic allegory on real communism in the Czech environment. Lots of venomous lines, humorous situations, and great acting, as well as clever filmmaking that helped Forman succeed in the world. Move the bed closer to the fire so that he warms up. Despite the undisputed cruelty of many scenes, I really like this film. The foreign producer was desperate at the time of selecting the girls for the beauty queen competition, but evidently didn't understand that the director was after something completely different. Overall impression: 95%.

A por (2002)

angol The basic problem of the film is its clutter, fragmentation, and unbalanced script. On the other hand, the positives include the originality and humor of some scenes, as well as the attractiveness of certain bizarre characters and micro-stories. Overall impression: 55%.

Halló, halló! (1982) (sorozat)

angol This British endeavor teeters precisely on the edge between genius and awkwardness. It is highly stylized, eccentric, and the actors overact to the point of catastrophe, but despite all this, it is highly amusing and original. It is true, however, that if the dialogue and characters were just a tiny bit more eccentric, I would rate it much lower. The series greatly benefits from excellent dubbing, which is no longer a given these days. The individual voices fit the actors' faces perfectly. Overall impression: 90%. Arthur Bostrom's French with his unforgettable catchphrases added one more star to the series.

Morgiana (1972)

angol Inu, The Oil Lamps may not be, but it is still a significant above-average in Czech cinematography and one of the best pieces by Juraj Herz, who had talent and creativity to spare at the time. Excellent performance by Janžurová in the lead dual role and proof that she is not just a good comedian, but also a top-notch character actress. Remarkable visual aspect of the film, which utilizes the rarely used Art Nouveau style and contributes significantly to creating a mysterious atmosphere. Ester Krumbachová did a great job...Overall impression 90%. An example of a film where the camera, sound, and set design are in unique harmony.

Krakatit (1980) Boo!

angol For me, Temné slunce is the worst work from Vávra's filmography, and considering the qualities of the crew and the resources invested, it is one of the worst films of the decade... A propagandistic piece that formally imitates the original Krakatit, but completely alienates itself from its idea - it is effectively a manipulative film that was politically favored and had an appropriately exaggerated budget. The actors did not want to be involved in the project twice, for example, Magda Vašáryová played the most embarrassing character of her film career and she played it poorly, by the way. Overall impression 10%.

Hitlers Helfer (1996) (sorozat)

angol Hitler's men are both in terms of content and form the pinnacle of documentary production, and the series can be considered as a benchmark for other documentary projects. It is a precise matter, and throughout the extensive work, I have not found a single error. Guido Knopp has dedicated many years to the issue of World War II and Nazi Germany and is currently one of the best experts on the subject. Czech Television has aired his work, including the related series Hitler's Warriors. Knopp digs mercilessly into the painful past of his country and does not shy away from even the most painful places. Overall impression: 100%.
