Alíz (1988)

angol Lewis Carroll's story of Alice entering Wonderland offers a wealth of material that is mirrored in many directorial concepts and adaptations. One of these is Jan Švankmajer's film, which perfectly blends live acting and incredible animation work that is more than admirable given the age of the film. I was perhaps a little distracted by the way little Alice speaks, which seemed a little too monotonous, but I still tried to pay more attention to the formal side of the film, which was more important and indeed unmissable. In short, a very good piece of filmmaking Czechs can be proud of, and which will certainly not be lost in the world of cinema.

Erotikon (1929)

angol Eroticon is an extraordinary and pioneering film for its time - thematically and stylistically - as it offers a number of technically well-executed scenes alongside taboo themes and topics. Gustav Machatý succeeded in making a film that, even after many decades, still commands respect and is still engaging. One of the best films of silent Czechoslovak cinema, of which our small nation can be truly proud.

Vadon (2014)

angol Wild follows a similar vein to Sean Penn's Into the Wild, and thou the latter is more impressive and somehow more memorable, Jean-Marc Vallée's film is also worth seeing and holds the bar quite high. I liked the interweaving of the present line with the past, revealing bit by bit the reason for the pilgrimage across the wilderness, with the most emotional scenes being those between Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern. A solid film about overcoming the obstacles that abound in life – as soon as you overcome one, another appears.

Titans of the Ice Age (2013)

angol Every age of our planet Earth has had its animal titans who dominated the times and seemed unattainable. This was also the case in the Ice Age, which was dominated by giant mammoths. This documentary uses computer technology to reconstruct the lives of these formidable creatures and tries to bring them closer to contemporary audiences. In short, a solid documentary that is both informative and visually engaging.

The Last Reef (2012)

angol A breathtaking documentary that offers a glimpse of the beauty of coral reefs, which are full of life and hide many secrets and animals of different shapes and sizes, through beautiful images. It also highlights the current state of these ecosystems rich in fauna and flora, which are threatened by the most advanced and dangerous species of our time – us humans. In short, a very well made documentary film, boasting both spectacular audiovisuals and a meaningful message (not only) for our generation.

Nagy szemek (2014)

angol When I found out that Tim Burton was going to join forces with Christoph Waltz and that two songs by my favourite Lana Del Rey were to be featured on the soundtrack, I couldn't wait. In the end, however, I am not happy with Big Eyes. The story wasn't bad, and neither were the performances, but I found it kind of bland, and it definitely could have had more of a bang. Maybe I was expecting too much, and the final product left a mediocre impression on me. One of many biopics that unfortunately doesn't stand out from other films like it, which is a shame considering the director's name, the cast and the premise.

A beavatott-sorozat: A lázadó (2015)

angol Insurgent is in many ways similar to Divergence, so my viewing experience was more or less comparable for both parts. The second part is a bit more mature, more drastic and more rebellious, but even so, the relationships between the characters come to the surface again, balancing out the rebellious side of the film. Many claim that this is a poorer sibling to The Hunger Games, but I like both series equally, so I'm satisfied. In short, a decent continuation of a story set in a post-apocalyptic era that offers one more look at society and people in the future.

Daniel világa (2014)

angol A very daring film that tries to show the audience what the situation and perception of paedophiles in the Czech Republic is like. The film also looks inside the main character Daniel, who is not afraid to show his face explicitly and decides to express himself on this sensitive issue. The film's approach to the subject attempts to break down the myths of paedophiles as "elderly, sleazy men lurking in the bushes somewhere in the park, waiting for innocent young victims to be abused, raped and eventually killed", which is suggested by the final form and concept, but it does not, however, lean towards a version in which paedophiles are to be pitied and regarded as some kind of victim of today's society. It is up to each viewer how they can deal with the subject matter and form their own opinion. In short, a film that definitely deserves attention, even if it is highly controversial in content.

Hamupipőke (2015)

angol If someone ever asked me what Walt Disney's classic Cinderella looks like, which I haven't seen yet, I would answer that it's just like this version by Kenneth Branagh, but in animated format, because that's how I imagine it. To many, this latest film adaptation may come across as a cheesy and infantile piece, a silly and colourfully overstuffed version of the famous fairy tale, but I really liked the look. So I was left to ride on the innocent relationship between Ella and the prince and the highly stylized visuals, which stood out most in the sets and costumes, which were a joy to look at. And I have to say that the small role for Helena Bonham Carter as the Fairy Godmother was great and incredibly funny. A gorgeous and flamboyant fairy tale feast for the eyes that was truly worth going to the cinema for.
