Tükrök (2008)

angol More of a fantasy detective story than a horror movie, but so be it. Jack Bauer vs. the mirror bogeymen didn't turn out as badly as I expected; in fact, I quite enjoyed it. The search for the causes of the Mayflower fire will remind every true Stephen King fan of many of his works, as will the death scenes. Kiefer Sutherland does a solid job, even though his character, Ben Carson, sucks, and the only saving grace is that Kiefer gives us glimpses of Jack. Thanks to Navarrete’s music and a very effective and satisfying conclusion (although we’ve seen something like this somewhere before, right?) I give it a nice 4 stars.

Donnie Darko (2001)

angol A little too crackpot for my taste, but as soon as everything falls into place, I can’t avoid being satisfied with this. I also like time travel and this journey back to the eighties was a fine experience. And excellent music, I must say.

A Főnix útja (2004)

angol A great adventure drama with very good acting performances. Dennis Quaid can still play a tough guy, Giovanni Ribisi a crazy fool, and Hugh Laurie plays as if in preparation for House. The most impressive scene was definitely the nighttime shootout with Chinese smugglers, underscored by Massive Attack.

A hihetetlen Hulk (2008)

angol I wasn't thrilled that the first Hulk’s original footsteps were abandoned, but it didn't turn out as badly as I expected. In fact, it turned out unexpectedly well. Although the mystery, cleverness, and fatefulness that Ang Lee delivered a few years ago are gone, we're getting a pure-bred action comic book movie, which, for The Hulk, is probably for the first time. I really enjoyed the unchanged Banner's chase scene with the soldiers on the Favela roofs, and I was glad that Leterrier approached it with the same care as, say, the fight between Blonsky and Mr. Green. Edward Norton was great as usual, and Roth and Hurt make worthy opponents. Only Liv Tyler sometimes seemed “weird". I also have to praise highly the music of Craig Armstrong, who was really playful with the soundtrack. Plus, for fans, we also have references to the Avengers and a visit from Robert Downey Jr. I had more fun than I’ve had in a long time.

World Trade Center (2006)

angol A pathetic borefest that I couldn't finish. I might give it another chance some day, but after a very long time. That one star is for "based on a true story".

WALL-E (2008)

angol Great science fiction, excellent comedy, and probably the best animated family movie you’ll see this year. As is usual with most Pixar movies, WALL-E will grab you at the beginning and hold you until the end and, in the meantime, it will guide you through an incredibly sophisticated universe where each component has its place. Children will be thrilled, adults will be astonished by the incredible scenery (abandoned New York from I Am Legend gets nowhere near this) and those in between, maybe both.

Az esemény (2008)

angol Except for Marky Mark’s somewhat odd performance and my expectation of a more powerful moral than just that people are mostly a bunch of scumbags who deserve to die (btw our Slovak brothers' title ‘Event’, is a catchier than the Czech ‘It Happened’) I quite liked it. The opening scenes, especially the one with the flying workers, are flawless and people behave wonderfully freakishly. Zooey Deschanel was fantastic as was John Leguisam's mathematician. Shy the director still knows how to make a movie. He can create the right atmosphere and so on, but Shy the screenwriter should take a break for a while. Wait for better ideas and prepare a big comeback. Too bad he didn't have a jab at Potter.

Szex telefonhívásra (2008)

angol Not bad for a debut. A great McGregor and an even better Jackman in a story based on differences between characters and trusting accountants. Thanks to the array of beautiful girls in this, there is lots to watch and who wouldn’t want to know Wyatt’s secret phone number? For Maggie Q, if for nothing else.

Csúcsformában 3. (2007)

angol Same old. Basically, the only thing that’s changed is the location (which they even included in the title, just in case) and the villain. Luckily, it’s a template that I find quite agreeable. Plus, the final fight on the Eiffel Tower was really impressive. And the outtakes are funnier than last time.

A sötétség serege (1992)

angol Rather than a horror film, this turned out to be a fantasy comedy full of wisecracks. And that's good. Campbell brings Ash's character to perfection. Raimi must have read Conan stories as a kid, and Army Of Darkness is part tribute and part parody of his adventures. I'm kind of curious if they're going to eventually make a fourth installment, and if they do, you can bet I'm going to go see it.
