Szerelem a Fehér házban (1995)

angol The American President is to some extent the culmination of the so-called Sex Trilogy: Fatal Attraction, Basic Instinct, and Disclosure starring Michael Douglas. Annette Bening is brilliant as his partner.

Hol van Fred? (2006)

angol Where Is Fred!? is a bad film, yet at the same time a decent German variation of trendy films of the time, such as the politically incorrect Shallow Hal. Actually, it is in fact a quality representative of a global genre within national cinema.

Rebecca (1997) (Tévéfilm)

angol It's not the BBC and it shows. Nineties BBC series are usually good even years later, but here we have a very mediocre set design, an uninteresting choice of period music and the acting is also barely average. I wouldn't even say that Rebecca is brilliant per se, just another novel drawing on a certain tradition. One cannot help but think, of course, of Jane Eyre. However, both the original Hitchcock version and the modern Netflix version leave this weak adaptation far behind.

Nevěsta (1970)

angol The Bride is a self-centered outing of poetics, including some absolutely insane non-acting.

Hop - a je tu lidoop (1977)

angol Monkey's Playtime is similar to other normalization emblems of the time. The only thing of any (at least historical) value is Miloslav Šimek in the small role of a teacher.

Io, Don Giovanni (2009)

angol A wonderful film about the librettist of Mozart's "Don Giovanni," Lorenzo da Ponte. It’s one of the lesser-known gems from the filmography of Tobias Moretti, who seems to be afraid of absolutely nothing. This time he played an excellent Casanova. While a film about da Ponte's later years in America would be just as interesting, this is an absolute classic - the expulsion from Venice, the perfect music, the proud singers, and the vice and love. It has everything it needs.

Barney és a nők (2010)

angol Since the days of Jim Carrey's films, Paul Giamatti has grown into a distinctive comedian whose films are not for everyone. But if you give it a chance, you'll encounter a deeply human story in the "life as it is" genre, with supporting roles graced by the talents of Rosamund Pike and Dustin Hoffman. And that's more than enough.

Román pro pokročilé (2019)

angol Since Online Dating, Zita Marinovová has improved quite a bit. She found out that less is sometimes more and built the film on fewer actors, realistic situations, and normal locations. At least Vašut and Čvančarová act as if they are in a real film, and it is almost a pity that they don't have similarly big roles more often. Both of them can handle even the silliest dialogue and make the most of every situation. Overall, A Novel for Advanced still falls into the amateurish parody category of all those Novels for Men and Women series, but if Marinovová has at least as much energy as Magnusek, I'll almost start looking forward to her future efforts.

Egy hét Marilynnel (2011)

angol Colin Clark and his books "The Prince, the Showgirl and Me: the Colin Clark Diaries" (1995) and "My Week with Marilyn" (2000) are mere local phenomena. This is classic British parasitism of Hollywood. The film version of this story is exactly the same - this is how a movie could be made about any movie a Hollywood star made outside the U.S. (what she ate, who fell in love with her, what her husband said...). It’s really an inferior genre. Never mind that we have a fine cast here, represented by names such as Julia Ormond, Derek Jacobi, Judi Dench, and Kenneth Branagh. We also get youth favorites Eddie Redmayne, Emma Watson, and Michelle Williams (whose interpretation of Monroe is questionable, to say the least). The Prince and the Showgirl was the first project of Marilyn Monroe Productions, so Monroe brought not only her name, the star couple Monroe-Miller, but also money to England, and it is therefore unrealistic to make a film about her as someone whose presence was suffered on the set.

Šťastný nový rok (2019)

angol A winter romantic comedy alternative. The cards are dealt in such a way that each age category has its own story, so theoretically everyone from teenagers to seniors will find something in it. Cliché after cliché, kitsch after kitsch. After the Mistresses series, I wanted to see the main foursome in a joint project one more time and that was the only thing worthwhile in the film. Otherwise, these are beautiful pictures from the pages of a magazine. Pauhofová shines like in old times in the arms of a millionaire.
