Paola Piacenza (Piacenza, 1963) is a filmmaker and a reporter for the Corriere della Sera's weekly supplement Io Donna, and also handles its film section. Since 2003 she has contributed to the Radiotre Rai program "Piazza Verdi". Her first documentary, The Land of Jerry Cans, filmed along the Iran-Iraq border, competed at the New York Independent Film and Video Festival and the Festival dei Popoli (winning the UCCA - Venti città Award). Her film In no Language in the World, which screened at the SalinaDocFest in 2011, portrayed two borderline realities, that of the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad and the ancient region of Tropoje in Albania. In the same year, she contributed to Milano 55,1: Cronaca di una settimana di passioni, a collective film about elections in the city of Milan. In a Free State was filmed in Southern Tunisia in 2011, during and after the so-called Arab Spring; it won a Special Mention as a documentary at the Solinas Prize Awards.
