Nikos Panayotopoulos (b. 1941, Mytilene, Greece) studied film in Athens. In 1960-73 he lived in Paris where he attended the Sorbonne's film school and the Cinemathéque. Since 1973 he has lived and worked in Athens. After turning out a few shorts, he debuted in features with The Colors of the Iris (Ta chromata tis iridos, 1974). Then followed The Idlers of the Fertile Valley (I tembelides tis eforis kiladas, 1978), awarded the Golden Leopard at the Locarno IFF and a Silver Hugo at the Chicago IFF. After Melodrama (1981), Varieté (1984) and The Woman Who Dreamed (I gynaika pou evlepe ta oneira, 1988), he made I Dream of My Friends (Onirevome tous filous mou, 1993), which garnered a Best Actor Award (for Lefteris Voyatzis) at the San Remo IFF. Other films: The Bachelor (O ergenis, 1997), Edge of Night (Afti i nihta meni, 1999), Beautiful People (2001) and I'm Tired of Killing Your Lovers (Kourastika na skotono tous agapitikous sou, 2002).
